As counsellors, we champion self-compassion, open communication, and prioritizing well-being. But how often do we truly embody these values in our own lives, especially within the often-demanding realm of helping others?
Take me, for instance. As someone living with Crohn's disease, a chronic illness that throws curveballs at my digestive system (and sometimes, my entire life), I found myself back in the hospital recently. It was a stark reminder of the importance of practicing what I preach.
Sure, I could've ignored the warning signs, pushed through the fatigue, and kept my schedule packed. But wouldn't that contradict the very principles I encourage my clients to embrace? Listening to your body, honoring its needs, and prioritizing self-care aren't just platitudes – they're the foundation of resilience, both for myself and for those I support.
This experience has been a powerful teacher. It's reaffirmed the vital role of patience, not just with clients, but with ourselves. It's shown me the strength in vulnerability, and the courage it takes to say, "I need help." Perhaps most importantly, it's reminded me that even counsellors have bad days, flare-ups, and hospital stays.
And that's okay. Because through it all, we can still be beacons of understanding, empathy, and hope. We can still walk the talk, even when the path takes us through unexpected detours.
So, my colleagues and fellow navigators of life's complexities, let's remember: our own journeys, challenges, and vulnerabilities can become powerful tools in the counselling room. By acknowledging our humanity and prioritizing our well-being, we show our clients that it's not just possible, but essential, to walk the talk – even when the road gets bumpy.
